The Customer Challenge
A valued Rochester Electronics’ supplier partner decided to move one of their high-speed Clock Generator devices to end-of-life (EOL) while the device remained in use across multiple industry applications. To support these applications, end customers needed to establish a continued long-term source of supply.
As a 100% authorized distributor, Rochester maintained finished inventory of these devices, providing long-term continued support. But what happens when the customer demand far exceeds stock availability, as was the case with these Clock Generator devices? It became clear that a longer-term solution was required beyond the existing inventory of finished devices.
The Rochester Solution
As a licensed semiconductor manufacturer, Rochester can manufacture devices no longer produced by the original component manufacturer (OCM). This makes our manufacturing services ideal when longer-term solutions are needed. We have extensive in-house capabilities for device replication, semiconductor assembly, reliability, and electrical test.
Upon program kickoff, initial die were selected from probed SiGe (Silicon Germanium) wafers. Using wafer maps provided by the supplier, devices were inspected and assembled into Quad Flat No Lead (QFN) packages. The packages were then fabricated at Rochester’s offshore assembly facilities, with careful attention paid to the layout, to optimize performance at high-operational frequencies.
Following the successful verification testing on an initial sample lot, Rochester implemented the production ramp-up phase of fully assembled devices. As part of the program, Test Engineers developed electrical test programs along with automated test handlers enabling high volume testing of the final devices. In addition, test engineering performed a range of RF measurements up to 10GHz, verifying high-speed Clock Generators performed at the required levels. Key parameters, such as Pulse Rise/Fall Times, Max Input Clock Frequency, and Propagation Delay, were all measured using specialized high-frequency test equipment, and all results met the specifications per the manufacturer’s datasheet.
Finally, devices were subjected to a range of reliability tests ensuring full compliance over a range of temperature and environmental conditions. Under these conditions testing highlighted full device performance with no impact on production yield.
The devices are now shipping in production quantities to a variety of customers. The performance is exact to the OCM’s specification, proving continued industry support can be maintained for applications that demand longer-term device lifecycle solutions.
